 What is Embodied Carbon?

Embodied carbon means carbon emissions associated with energy consumption and chemical processes during a product's extraction,  manufacture , transportation, assembling, maintenance and destruction stage.

Embodied carbon is the emissions associated with a product in entire life cycle minus the emissions associated in operational phase.

Eg: Assume a building is made of  bricks.

Embodied carbon is the emissions associated with extraction of raw material, manufacturing of bricks, transportation, placing , maintenance and destruction(demolition and transportation) etc..

Embodied carbon does not include the carbon emissions of the building during operation phase like emissions associated with energy requirements for  heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation etc.,
